my buddy told me about these guys
theyre pretty sick guitarists but the vocals lack something in my opinion
http://www.myspace.com/protestthehero
they're also pretty daring for putting out a concept album as their debut
like/dislike? whats the opinion

When I saw them play at the shaw conference center I thought they had a good live show, and I really think the bass player has some chops... but their singer brings it all down.

He ran out of the side of the stage with his hands bent up to his armpits limpwristed and flailing... turned me off right there. I don't like his vocals anyway; seems like he "cry"'s the notes way too much.

I dunno... They don't seem to be anything special... typically when I see the words "concept album" I tend to roll my eyes; usually it's unnecessary and pretentious.

(edit: Listening to the link you provided - they're actually not as bad as I had originally surmised... studio wise... hmmm...)

Their vocalist improves with age. Their first album was weak in terms of vocals, Kezia was slightly better. The guitars got tighter as well.

yeah, kezia is pretty killer. And i'm sure the next album with be alot better based on listening to the first two. I've talked to the guys from the band and they are necrophagist/dream theater fans. and it shows in some of their stuff.

hah, everyone always complains about their vocalist.

yeah a lot of people do because it's not metal or whatever.
I myself think it fits there style. but when I first heard it, I didn't tickle my fancy and still really isn't my favorite style of vocals. but as long as it works for them eh.

Kezia is my favorite release from 2005.

Maybe I should get out more but they are probably my second favorite band right now.

And yes, I play favorites, be warned.

I highly dislike this band. A lot of other bands who do this "mathcore" or whatever style do it far superior.

For me there's alot more to it than simply the style and how well it's done. The whole thing just seems to work for me.

What bands would you recommend in this vein?

WOW!! Someone who actually referred to them as "Math_____". Thats amazing that someone actually knows what it's called when you write using off beats and frequently changing time signatures. Now.. if only drumers would stop counting when I jam with them and play to the music. Is it so hard to break the 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 habbit?

Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge and Daughters are all favorites. There are more, I'm just to lazy to list them. Those 3 (Converge in particular) are favorites of mine.

I put no thought into the list of bands in my post. Yours is far superior.

I just cannot get into this band, no matter how hard I try.

The vocals on PTH sounds too much like The Darkness for ears. Just me?

Try Genghis Tron, Between the Buried and Me or even HORSE the Band. Or Open Eyes Elysia, one thread down.

Man, you guys have weird taste in hardcore...

#12, HORSE, TDTDE...can't get into any of these bands....

However, I wil 2nd, 3rd and 4th the Converge suggestions...probably the one of the best hardcore bands goin...also Dillinger rules.

You might also want to check out The End's Within Davidia or Most Precious Blood's Our Lady Of Annihilation

I really like this band. I have Mongrel, it makes me think of what Atheist might sound like if they played hardcore.

Circle Takes the Square and Converge are amazing groups.

Their releasing a new record a few days before the show at the end of the month. Here's a couple tracks of what to expect--or to see if your interested at all;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk3hZ3V6jCs
--(Above link) Good quality vid of their single off their new album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8ouoQwSj0g
--(above) same song but as they appeared on MTV Live if you wanted to hear the whole song[exceptional quality]

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeUrZUabB34
--another song they've been playing live off their upcoming release[slightly below average sound quality

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTB-3HQEZzo
--the last link i'm putting here; arguably their most 'metal' song released to date[ABOVE average sound quality]

So yeah, Protest The Hero. Unfortunately they hopped on this tour w/ silverstine headlining and the devil wears prada and ill scarlet accompanying them. A less than stellar line up, but thats life. ...Resulting in a 22 dollar ticket price that comes to just over 30 bucks after all the bullshit added to it.

Ok, new shits leaked, however I must first thank everyone for recommending Converge. HOLY FUCK, awesome band, made room on my iPod and loving all their albums.

New PTH is gonna take a few more listens, different and i'm not sure if its in a good way or not yet. Fortress definately isn't the tdf that I thought Kezia was but theres some good stuff there. I'll give er a few more spins and make some comments that no one gives a shit about.
