Perhaps it is not the fact that bands use myspace to get their music out to the masses and to be heard. Perhaps, and I am going out on a limb here, it is the endless stream of shitty bands who have a false sense of self entitlement and believe that a person such as David Gold owes it to them to take the time to sit there and listen to their shitty band play their shitty band music. And then on top of that, somehow offer constructive criticism and support this shitty band for, "Keeping the scene alive, man!" *fist pump here*
Via my website/podcast I get a lot of bands sending me their MySpace page and asking me to play their tracks or show some support. To be brutally honest ... many of these bands are absolute shit!
I had one band contact me with their bio and MySpace page .. it was one badly recorded songs (with 15 listens) and a bio that basically said "We started in November 2009. No solid line up yet." ... ohhhhh kay.
I've had this same conversation with friends before. MySpace (and the advent of cheap computers and free audio editing software) has become both a blessing and a curse to music.
Back in the day bands would play in their garage and vet their song through a ton of live shows before even considering putting something on tape. Usually by that time the band has a good collection of songs and are usually pretty tight as a band.
Nowadays all a band needs to do is plug a mic into a computer. Play a song. Upload to MySpace and they are available to the world.
Of course the ease of recording and getting your music available to the masses quickly and cheaply is a great benefit. For bands WITH TALENT!
